Why retexture?
Safety
It is recognised that road surface micro and macro-texture are the primary influencing factors in effective braking, and inadequate skid resistance will lead to higher incidences of skid-related accidents, especially in wet conditions. Retexturing restores road skid resistance to the same level or better as when it was first laid, enhancing safety for road users.
Carbon Savings
In an independently verified lifecycle analysis report on the process, it was found that retexturing offers a 96% reduction in carbon emissions compared to resurfacing a road. It was also observed that, when compared to surface dressing and microsurfacing, emissions savings of 64% and 87% can be achieved respectively.
Environmentally
Beneficial
The environmental benefits are significant, with no natural aggregates being consumed, low carbon emissions, and arisings being recovered and recycled. Our captive shotblast retexturing equipment blasts, recovers, and recycles the steel shot along with other detritus from the substrate. Recovered fines can be used as a filler for Type 1 granular sub-bases. All other arisings are captured and disposed of as non-hazardous waste in accordance with waste regulations.
Extend Asset Life
Cost effective and value enhancing asset management has become much more difficult in recent times with tightening budgets and increases in prices, so it is vital for authorities to introduce new techniques and working practices to overcome these challenges. This comes down to adopting practical, sustainable solutions that will maintain the performance of your roads and ensure their longevity. By restoring skid resistance, our retexturing solutions effectively extend the life of road networks, particularly when the road structure is sound, meaning that resurfacing can be deferred by another 3–4 years multiple times.
Minimise Disruption
We work closely with traffic management and highway authorities to minimise any disruption for road users from retexturing. To be as flexible and efficient as possible, retexturing of a road can be carried out across at 4000m² per unit per shift either on the full width of the carriageway or in the vehicle wheel tracks only, as required by the client.
During the retexturing process, steel shot is recycled, and all waste is separated, captured, and stored for disposal. This results in a completely dust-free and dry surface, eliminating the need for any aftercare or secondary sweeping and allowing the carriageway to reopen immediately after the work is finished.
Captive Shot Blast Retexturing
The captive shot blasting system can be used on all asphalt substrates. Graded steel shot fired at an optimum velocity is used to abrade and reprofile the exposed aggregate in the substrate. The retexturing process is managed from the cab, using a computer system and touchscreen with high-quality onboard cameras monitoring the activity. The operator has a close view of the blast head and the surface throughout the process and can make fine adjustments. The spent shot, excess bitumen, aggregate fines, and other detritus are collected by a powerful suction system, separated, and the shot is reclaimed and reused.
Hydrotexture Water Retexturing
The Hydrotexture technique delivers water at high pressure to scour excess binder and detritus from the road surface, thus restoring macro-texture and exposing micro-texture, which ideal for use of “fatted” surfaces. The system is purpose-built to allow pressure and flow rate to be adjusted to achieve the optimum result for each site. The Hydrotexture system recovers the resulting mix of water and detritus using powerful suction, thereby eliminating the need for a separate
road sweeper.
Concrete retexturing
JMS has also adapted its captive shot blast retexturing system for use on concrete surfaces. By varying the speed of the vehicle, increasing the size of the shot and the velocity at which it is propelled, a substantial increase in both micro and macro-texture can be achieved.
Airport Maintenance
Hydrotexture also proves useful for numerous airport maintenance tasks.
The system is ideal for the removal of rubber deposits from touchdown zones, taxiways, and aprons and effective for runway marking removal.
